As a biochemistry major at Salem College, you will learn and integrate chemistry, biology, physics, and mathematics to understand and solve problems in the areas of health, medicine, environment, forensics, and food at the molecular level.
The biochemistry major will introduce you to the application of chemical principles to biological systems. With a degree in biochemistry, you will be prepared to pursue a variety of careers or postgraduate studies in biochemistry, molecular biology, medicine, biomedical research, pharmacology, biophysics, and other related areas.
Career paths in Biochemistry
Salem offers a bachelor of science in biochemistry. By majoring in biochemistry you will learn the basic chemistry, biology, physics, and mathematics that will help you understand and solve problems in the areas of health, environment, forensics, and food safety at the molecular level.
Your faculty in biochemistry hold doctorates and are well trained in the fields of biochemistry, chemistry, and/or biology. Salem’s small class size means that you will receive individual attention and hands-on experience from our faculty.
The field of biochemistry prepares you for a wide array of careers. Biochemists are employed in government, industry, education, medicine, and by private institutions. The program of study also prepares you for professional school in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, chiropractic, optometry, and veterinary fields.
This is an example of course requirements. Actual requirements depend on the year declared and can be found in the academic catalogs.
The student who seeks the bachelor of science degree with a major in biochemistry must complete a minimum of eighty-three semester hours.
