Salem College is located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, a vibrant college town known as the “City of Arts and Innovation”. Position Summary:

Salem Academy and College invites applications for a Psychological Science open rank faculty position to be supported by the Page Daniel Hill Science Professorship Endowment Fund. Hill, an alumna from the class of 1948, was a leader in her class and the community who deeply valued her Salem College education and created this fund to support extraordinary teaching. This tenure-track position is scheduled to begin in August 2024. We seek a faculty member with a background that supplements the College’s new focus as the only liberal arts college in the nation with an exclusive focus on health leadership. Expertise may include, but is not limited to, health psychology, counseling psychology, or a background in neuroscience.

This position involves teaching required courses for the psychology major, including Introduction to Psychological Science and Research Methods with Human Participants, as well as other courses that meet college and departmental needs (e.g., Developmental Psychology, courses in the College’s general education core (Salem Impact), and courses in the candidate’s area of expertise).  Candidates should demonstrate teaching excellence and the ability to mentor undergraduate students, especially first-generation students.  Those willing to mentor students in independent research and contribute to the College’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion initiatives are encouraged to apply.  The successful candidate will also support the service needs of the Psychological Science program and College.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Standard teaching load of seven courses per year may include:
    • Introduction to Psychological Science
    • Developmental Psychology and/or Social Psychology
    • Research Methods
    • A course contributing to the health leadership focus of Salem College, such as courses in health psychology, counseling, neuropsychology, or behavioral psychology.
    • An upper-level psychological science lab course(s) in the successful candidate’s area of expertise;
    • Additional electives or general education courses as needed.
  • Support students’ independent studies and advise and mentor students
  • Engage students in scholarly research
  • Participate in service to the Psychological Science Program and the College, including committee membership and program assessment
  • Work on other teaching and learning projects as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Psychological Science or closely related discipline; applicants with a terminal degree in another academic or professional field with a focus on or experience in health are also invited to apply
  • Experience teaching psychological science courses as the instructor of record within a higher education setting
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students
  • Demonstrated potential for creating a program of psychological science research that will involve undergraduates
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate level, including active learning and engagement of students with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills – in the classroom, with colleagues, in written work, and in active listening
  • Collaborative and willing to work with other faculty both within the discipline and across disciplines

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three or more years of experience teaching undergraduate courses as the instructor of record
  • Experience teaching courses that will add to the current expertise of the psychological sciences program that would be of high interest to Salem College students
  • Experience with course and curriculum development
  • Experience with student recruitment and engagement
  • Experience mentoring or collaborating with undergraduate students on research in psychology
  • Demonstrated ability to engage in innovative projects involving students

Physical Functions:

While performing the responsibilities of the position, the employee is required to sit for varying lengths of time; occasionally stand, walk, and kneel and regularly ascend/descend stairs; use hands and fingers to handle or feel and manipulate keys on a keyboard; perform extended periods of work at a computer workstation, view a computer monitor; perceive sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, and receive detailed information through oral communication; express and exchange ideas by means of spoken word; and work in an office setting.
