Salem College Launches New Computer Science Major and Digital Marketing Program to Enhance Career Opportunities

Winston-Salem, NC – Salem College is excited to announce the introduction of two new academic programs designed to equip students with the skills needed to thrive in the rapidly growing job market. Salem is launching a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with a Minor in Data Science, as well as a Digital Marketing concentration within its Business Administration major. Both programs are strategically designed to meet the rising demand for professionals in the tech and digital marketing fields, which are known for their strong job growth and high earning potential, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

These new offerings are made possible through Salem’s partnership with RIZE, an innovative leader in digital education, known for its cutting-edge educational partnerships.

In alignment with Salem College’s commitment to creating women leaders, the College is focused on increasing female representation in the tech industry. Currently, women represent only 27% of the overall Computer Science workforce, and Salem aims to bridge this gap by offering mentorship, academic support, and empowerment to women pursuing this major.

The Computer Science major and Digital Marketing concentration are crafted to address the critical need for skilled professionals in two of the most dynamic industries today. Students pursuing the Computer Science major will gain expertise in areas such as software development, data analysis, and cybersecurity, while those specializing in Digital Marketing will master key strategies in search engine optimization (SEO), social media, content creation, and online advertising.

Computer Science Major and Data Science Minor

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science is designed to equip students with the essential skills needed to succeed in high-demand tech careers. According to the BLS, Software Developers will see a job growth of 22% between 2020 and 2030, while Information Security Analysts will experience a staggering growth rate of 33%. The median annual salary for Software Developers is $110,140.

The program is offered in a hybrid format, with 9 of the required courses available on-campus at Salem College and 7 courses offered online.

Digital Marketing Concentration (Online)

According to the BLS, Marketing Managers are among the highest-paid professionals in today’s workforce, with a projected job growth rate of 6% over the next decade.

The Digital Marketing concentration, offered as part of the Business Administration major, will provide students with the tools needed to succeed in the rapidly evolving field of digital marketing. Many universities do not offer dedicated digital marketing programs due to the ever-changing nature of the field. However, Salem College, in collaboration with RIZE, is dedicated to providing the latest curriculum that equips students with the relevant skills to keep up with emerging marketing trends and technologies.

A Commitment to Economic Mobility

Salem College is proud to be recognized for its commitment to diversity and access to education. In its Education Issue in 2023, The New York Times Magazine ranked Salem College as No. 2 in the nation for economic diversity as part of its College-Access Index. The new Computer Science and Digital Marketing programs further demonstrate Salem’s dedication to offering academic opportunities that directly enhance students’ career prospects.
