Salem Academy and College Hires Michael Williams as New Athletics Director
Winston-Salem, NC (July 17, 2024) – After a nationwide search, Salem Academy and College has hired Michael Williams as Salem’s athletics director effective Aug. 1. Williams joins Salem Academy and College from John Jay College where he served as the associate athletics director for facilities and operations. At Salem, he will serve as a key leader for both Salem Academy and Salem College athletics programs and serve as a member of the President’s Cabinet.
“On behalf of our students, faculty, and staff, I am excited to welcome Michael to our Salem campus and community,” President Summer McGee said.
“We are incredibly fortunate to have found such a strong strategic leader with a growth mindset in Michael. He brings a unique combination of NCAA Division III, women’s college athletics, and independent school athletic administration experience to Salem. I look forward to the energy and enthusiasm that he will bring to the Spirits and the Sabers in the years to come,” President McGee added.
During his time at John Jay College in New York, Williams led the maintenance of all athletic facilities, managed the internal master calendar, oversaw the space rental process, supervised aquatics and recreation, and organized camps and clinics for varsity sport programs. Prior to John Jay College, Williams also served as the athletics director at Salisbury School, an all-boys private boarding school in New York, where he led the athletics department including hiring of coaches, scheduling games and practices, budget preparation, compliance, facilities management, and managing the athletics website. Williams also spent time at the City College of New York (CCNY), where he was the head women’s basketball coach and the strength and conditioning coach and served as the athletic administrator and event game manager and head women’s basketball coach at Simmons University in Massachusetts. During his time at Simmons, he led them to their first postseason appearance since 2010.
