Salem College Students smiling for a photo during 2022 Orientation

Welcome Home Salem!

It is an exciting time at Salem College as we begin the new school year. We are so delighted to welcome our incoming first-year and transfer students and to welcome back our returning students. Students are moving in over the weekend starting with first-year students on Friday, August 19 and upper-class students on Saturday, August 20 and Sunday, August 21.

The first week of school is full of excitement as students settle in and meet new people as well as connect with old friends. During this “Welcome Week,” which starts August 22, there are several important events taking place.

First and foremost, classes begin on Monday, August 22. There’s nothing quite like meeting your professors and classmates at the start of each semester. It’s the beginning of a new learning adventure full of anticipation. Also taking place that day is the Club Fair, which will be held from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on the plaza outside the Student Center in the heart of Salem’s campus. This fair is a great way to find out about the wide variety of student clubs and organizations. There’s something to interest everyone including the performing arts, activism and event planning. Clubs and organizations provide students with the opportunity for personal growth in professional leadership and service and are a way to meet fellow students with similar interests and have fun.

Opening Convocation will take place on Tuesday, August 23 from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. This annual ceremony marks the official start of the academic year. It takes place in Hanes Auditorium in The Salem Academy and College Elberson Fine Arts Center. Immediately after Convocation there will be a Community Picnic for faculty and staff and their families as well as students at Bryant Hall & Patio from 5:15 to 7 p.m. on August 23.

On Wednesday, August 24 from noon until 1 p.m. the Work Study/Major Fair will be held on the plaza outside the Student Center. This is an opportunity to learn about work study options and find out more about the various majors offered at Salem College. Students can talk with representatives from the various departments.

That night, the Big/Lil Kick Off Dance Party will take place on Clewell Patio at 7 p.m. “Bigs” are juniors who are paired with first-year students called “Lils.” Part of a long-standing tradition at Salem College, Bigs help introduce Lils to life at Salem.

The Library Expo is scheduled for Thursday, August 25 from noon until 1 p.m. and then again from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Library. The Library is a vital resource for students and the Expo is a chance to learn about all the Library offers including associated services like The Quest Center, which gives students access to online resources and in-person peer tutoring opportunities. The Quest program is an invaluable resource for students.

Welcome to all Salem College students, faculty and staff!
