Meet Chais White, Class of 2027

Chais is a health science major and double minor in nutrition and public health.

How did you decide that Salem College was right for you?

The moment I stepped onto campus and took in the beautiful buildings and greenery, I felt an immediate sense of calm. The warm welcome from the admissions staff, along with meaningful conversations with President McGee and Dean McGee, made me feel like I truly belonged. It wasn’t just me choosing Salem—Salem chose me!

Where is your favorite place on campus?

My favorite place on campus is the gym! Since being at Salem I’ve been surrounded by amazing athletes that constantly push me to stay healthy throughout my college experience.

How are you learning about leadership at Salem College?

I am constantly surrounded by great leaders, from our president to student government representatives, and observing their leadership styles serves as a valuable learning experience for me. Salem also offers a wide range of classes that specifically focus on leadership development, and incorporating these courses into my schedule has further enhanced my understanding and skills in this area.

What are you learning about health leadership at Salem College?

At Salem College, I’m learning that health leadership is about more than just “health based” needs; it’s also about advocating for the well-being of individuals and communities. Through classes and experiences, I’m constantly developing skills, which are critical for guiding myself and others toward healthier lifestyles. I’m also gaining insight into how leadership in health involves collaboration, both with peers and professionals, to create inclusive and effective wellness programs that address diverse needs.

From your perspective, why is Salem a remarkable place?

Salem is truly remarkable because of its strong sense of community. Here, everyone knows they can depend on one another, whether through small connections or deep bonds. It’s a place where everyone has engaged with each other at least once, making it feel like a true home away from home.

What is your biggest accomplishment that you are most proud of while being a Salem College student?

One of my proudest accomplishments as a Salem College student is becoming a resident assistant. Being entrusted with such an important role has significantly strengthened my leadership skills, while the direct connection with my fellow students has allowed me to build meaningful and lasting bonds.

What would be your recommendation to a student who is considering studying at Salem College, but can’t decide if she wants to attend?
