A Remarkable Story

Meet Brian Voss

Meet Brian

Brian Voss loves plants. In his role at Salem Academy and College as Assistant Director of Grounds, he’s deeply familiar with every plant on the campus, and, although he insists he “likes them all,” his favorite is the rising sun redbud tree. “I don’t know everything, but I know most plants,” Brian said.

Brian has worked hard keeping the Salem campus beautiful for over three decades. After earning a degree in horticulture from NC State, Brian eventually found his way to Old Salem, where he worked with the horticulture crew. When a position opened at Salem Academy and College, Brian didn’t hesitate to apply. 35 years later, he’s just as passionate about preserving the beauty of our historic campus as he was on day one. “I love history, so I enjoy working in such a historic setting. My favorite season on campus is spring. I love it when, after a cold winter, the flowers start blooming, and everything pops,” Brian enthused.

He has seen generations of Salem students come and go over the decades. Brian enjoys getting to know the students, faculty, and staff he meets on campus, and he’s even had a few student workers.

I like to meet the students when they come in. I met one student who was visiting with her dad. I met them by the May Dell, and I told her, ‘This is where you’re going to have your graduation ceremony.’ I just love that setting for graduation.”

Brian’s commitment to Salem has spilled over into his personal life as well. He and his wife held their wedding on campus, on the Bryant Hall patio, and they hosted their reception in the Refectory. “I love Salem’s history and that it’s been educating women for 250 years,” Brian said. His daughter graduated from Salem Academy in 2011, so Brian and his family’s ties to Salem’s history and community run deep.
