Public Health is a broad field that focuses on improving the health of communities and populations. Students will take courses in health communication, public policy, biology, statistics, and ethics, as well as core classes in healthy equity, public health research, global health, environmental health, epidemiology, health promotion, program planning and evaluation, and management of public health organizations.
The discipline of public health prepares students to understand how the health and well-being of people, communities, and populations are impacted by looking at the interactions of various factors through a social ecological lens. This includes looking at the impact that sociocultural, political, environmental, biological, organizational, and economic factors have on the health of everyone. As such, understanding these principles allow public health practitioners to assess the needs and strengths of these populations when it comes to health needs, to build and develop programs and policies to address health concerns with the communities, and evaluate overall effectiveness of these programs and policies. All of this is done with an eye on the various components that impact health through addressing health equity and social determinants of health.Students completing the Bachelor’s degree will be prepared to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) exam through the National Commision for Health Education Credentialing, Inc.
