Salem Academy and College Names Darrell Farewell Chief Financial Officer and Vice President for Finance

Salem Academy and College has named Darrell L. Farewell, CIA, CISA, as its next chief financial officer and vice president of finance. He will begin his new role in September.

Farewell joins Salem from Wake Forest University, where he is director of capital planning. In that role, he leads planning for the university’s multi-year capital budget and works with campus partners to align capital requests with institutional priorities.

Previously, Farewell served as executive director of finance and administration for the Wake Forest University School of Business. He oversaw financial and administrative planning across the school’s Winston-Salem and Charlotte campuses. His responsibilities included managing a multi-million dollar operating budget and endowment portfolio.

“Darrell understands that strong financial leadership is part of how we carry out our mission,” said Salem Academy and College President  Jill Fleuriet. “He brings a thoughtful, practical approach to his work. He also understands higher education and the Winston-Salem community. I am very glad he is joining Salem.”

Farewell has more than 20 years of experience in higher education, financial services, risk management and organizational operations. Before joining Wake Forest, he held leadership positions with USAA, BB&T and PNC Financial Services Group, where his work included internal audit, credit risk management, and strengthening financial reporting and organizational controls.

Farewell earned an MBA in corporate finance from Waynesburg University and a bachelor’s degree in history from the College of Charleston. He is a Certified Internal Auditor and Certified Information Systems Auditor and completed The Advanced Leadership Institute’s (TALI) National Executive Leadership Academy, in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business Executive Education Program.

A Winston-Salem resident, Farewell serves on the board of the Arts Council of Winston-Salem & Forsyth County and the Allegacy Financial Supervisory Committee. He also serves as board treasurer for Scouting America’s Old Hickory Council.
