Intellectual Wellness is the ability to open our minds to new ideas and experiences that can be applied to personal decisions, group interaction and community betterment. The desire to learn new concepts, improve skills, and seek challenges in pursuit of lifelong learning contributes to our Intellectual Wellness.
Salem College’s Core Values are rooted in the distinct Moravian commitment to incorporating education and intellectual wellness into all aspects of life for faculty, staff, and students. Our core values include:
The academic program at Salem has its foundation and purpose in the traditional liberal arts and sciences. Salem believes that every student should have a substantive engagement with liberal learning to ensure she has a reasonable command of the intellectual skills and cultural resources she needs to be a productive woman in a changing and increasingly complex world. Beyond that, the College expects each student to demonstrate competence in a major area of interest, as well as breadth knowledge in subject matter central to the arts and sciences. The goal is to enable students to prepare for graduate or professional school, career or other opportunities requiring a liberal education.
Because the College places a premium on meeting the special interests and needs of each student – as well as promoting intellectual wellness overall – the academic curriculum offers not only various majors, minors and programs but also extensive opportunities for independent study, off-campus study, study abroad and internships.
Salem also provides students with the tools they need to perform their best in the academic arena, from individual advising to learning workshops and one on-one tutoring. These assistance programs are listed in detail in our Academic Support area on the website.
