As early as the 1850s, Salem Academy was recognized as providing preparation for the teaching profession. When formalized licensure practices were initiated in North Carolina, Salem College adapted its curriculum to meet the requirements of the state. The teacher education program of the College has been accredited by the state of North Carolina since 1964.
Today, Salem College continues its commitment to both liberal arts and the preparation of teachers with the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) and the Master of Education (MEd) degree programs. These two graduate programs offer post-baccalaureate students the chance to prepare for or to enhance a career as a classroom teacher. The MAT program is designed for the college graduate with a firm foundation in the liberal arts and sciences who seeks professional licensure and a master’s degree. The MEd program is ideally suited for licensed teachers seeking to enhance their professional practice. Both programs are designed to meet the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) Standards. The online Master of Education School Counseling program allows students to gain the knowledge and skills required to become licensed school counselors. The online Master of Education in Educational Leadership prepares teachers to become effective school leaders in such roles as principal, assistant principal, curriculum coordinator, instructional coach, and district administrators.
At Salem College, we welcome prospective graduate students who are intellectually curious, determined, and energetic; who place a priority on personal achievement; and who demand a highly engaged and rigorous learning environment.
