Kierston Garner is returning to Salem College Softball as an assistant coach for the Spirits. She is an Alumna who graduated with a B.A. in Psychology and Minored in Coaching in May 2016. Garner, an infielder, joins the staff after a career as a four-time Great South Athletic Conference player. She was selected to be on the All-Freshman Team as well as an NC All-State second team in 2013 as a first-year, NCAA All-South Region First-Team in 2016, and as the Great South Player of the Year.
Garner finished her senior season in 2016 ranked high in NCAA DIII in several categories. She finished 12th in batting average (.564), 16th in home runs per game (.49), 21st in slugging percentage (1.154), and 15th in home runs (18).
Upon returning to her Alma Mater, Garner says that her pastime all her life has been doing something involving a yellow softball. For her to be able to play the sport not only every summer, but for four years at the collegiate level she has so much to give back to the sport that taught her many life lessons. But, being able to give another athlete their dream in becoming something bigger than they imagine is something she’s looking forward to the most.
Coach Long has helped make that dream come true by bringing her back to Salem and she cannot thank him enough for seeing something special enough in her to bring her back to her second home. Garner also wants say that if it was not for her mother and father’s tough love and guidance through her childhood that she would never been able to become the woman that she is today. She owes them so much and cannot thank them enough for their love and support.
