What’s the Summer Read?

All incoming first-years will read a book together before coming to campus. You will discuss it, write about it, and then hear the author talk about it as part of your First-Year Seminar.

This past year’s summer read was We Need New Names, by NoViolet Bulawayo. This literary work traces the life of a girl who emigrates from Zimbabwe to the suburbs of the United States. Bulawayo provides an incisive critique of the intersections of nationhood, race, gender, and identity in US society, among many other themes. The book won the PEN/Hemingway award and was a finalist for the Man Booker Prize. Click here for the New York Times’ review.

We welcomed NoViolet Bulawayo to campus in September.

Buy the book on Barnes & Noble or Amazon. Hard copy is recommended.
