Almost one year ago, we asked our community to Step Up for Salem, and our alumnae, parents, friends, faculty, staff, and even our students, rose to the challenge. Step Up for Salem raised over $14 million, exceeding the $10 million campaign goal. Over 3,230members of the Salem Community stepped up to invest in Salem’s future during a critical time. Salem saw a 64% increase in our total number of donors, and 586 donors made their first-ever gift to Salem.
“I want to express my deepest appreciation to Salem’s alumnae, board, staff, faculty, and the local community for Stepping Up for Salem during the past year. It takes a village, and the village responded,” said Salem Academy and College President Sandra J. Doran. “Our school will be forever grateful to those who supported us.”

Considered one of the most beautiful places on the planet, the island of Santorini is the crown jewel of the legendary Greek islands.

Virginia Ann “Ginny” Johnson, Dean of Students at Salem College from 1968 to 1991, died Friday, June 21, at the age of 91. She worked as a program director at YMCAs in Albemarle, NC and Elkin, NC before coming to Salem College in 1962 as a physical education teacher. She was named Dean of Students in 1968, a time when college students around the country were rebelling against rules and demanding more voice on campus. From the start, Dean Johnson navigated those restless currents at Salem with a deft hand, and after just one year as dean, the senior class dedicated the 1969 yearbook to her, acknowledging her ability to bring out the best in students.

The Sawtooth School for Visual Art in Winston-Salem has appointed Amy Jordan (C ‘13) to the role of executive director. Jordan had served as interim executive director since earlier this year. Before that, she was the vice president of Arts and Innovation and had filled various roles at the Sawtooth School for the past seven years.
During her time at Sawtooth, Jordan has established new programs, reinvigorated others, and opened new studios for printmaking and textiles. A multimedia artist with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts, Jordan developed Sawtooth’s Art and Wellness program, which uses visual arts to help oncology patients and their caregivers cope with stress and complex problems.
