WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JANUARY 30, 2019)—The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, a statewide, private, family foundation based in Winston-Salem, has committed to providing a grant of $200,000 to Salem Academy and College’s Step Up for Salem campaign. Step Up for Salem was launched in fall 2018 with a goal of raising $10 million to fortify the school’s economic stability. To date, Step Up for Salem has commitments totaling more than $7.8 million.
“We have tremendous confidence in the future of Salem and are pleased to demonstrate our support for such a diverse institution that is educating the next generation of women leaders who will be strong multi-cultural, critical thinkers and doers,” said Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation Executive Director Maurice “Mo” Green. “We believe our grant to Salem is an investment in the personalized education program that Salem offers to women, and we hope others will join us by supporting the Step Up for Salem campaign.”
“The Salem Academy and College family greatly appreciates the commitment from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation to our campaign,” McDara P. Folan III, chair of the Salem Academy and College Board of Trustees said. “The contribution itself is generous, but equally important is the Foundation’s recognition of the important role that Salem plays in the community and the value of the Academy and College to our entire state and beyond.”
Founded nearly 250 years ago in 1772, Salem Academy and College—like the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation—has deep roots in Winston-Salem and throughout North Carolina. Today, Salem has 8,000 alumnae working in leadership positions in business, not-for-profit organizations, schools, churches, and government institutions across North Carolina.
“The momentum is evident in the Step Up for Salem campaign. We received several important gifts late last year, and this significant grant from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation is a great way to begin 2019,” Salem Academy and College President Sandra Doran said. “We have the momentum. Now, our job is to keep it going strong. I hope others will follow the leadership of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation by stepping up for Salem.”

Step for Salem is a short-term, focused campaign with a goal of raising $10 million in unrestricted gifts by June 30, 2019. These funds will be used to support the Academy and College operational budget and to reduce institutional debt. The success of this campaign will make a difference by alleviating pressure on institutional resources so that Salem can continue to provide an exceptional educational experience for its students.
Salem Academy and College is the oldest educational institution for girls and women in the United States. With more than 15,000 alumnae who serve as teachers, physicians, researchers, artists, musicians, inventors, community volunteers, and business executives, Salem Academy and Salem College continue to educate the next generation of global leaders.
