Update on the Interim President search process

Update on the Interim President search process

March 20, 2018

This communication is to update the greater Salem community on progress to date and the process being deployed by the Interim Presidential Search subcommittee of the Transition Team to ensure that we have an Interim President appointed as soon as possible.  Our goal is to have the Interim in place by May 1.

We are using The Registry, a global academic executive search firm and the nation’s gold standard when it comes to matching the right interim executive talent with academic institutions requiring temporary staffing.  Since 1992, The Registry has served over 300 clients from all facets of the academic world from small liberal arts colleges like St. Mary’s College of Maryland to large research institutions such as the University of Arizona.  We feel very fortunate to have such a reputable organization ready and able to help us with this task.

The subcommittee drafted and submitted a needs document (i.e., job description) to the Registry several weeks ago.  We are pleased to report that on March 19 the subcommittee received information on eight highly qualified applicants to screen.  The process going forward is as follows:

March 19-30 - the Interim Presidential Search subcommittee reviews the eight applicants

March 30 – the subcommittee selects three finalists to invite for interviews on campus

April 11 and 12 – finalists visit Salem for tours and interviews with small interview teams made up of:

  • Representative members of the Board of Trustees
  • The Presidential Cabinet and direct reports
  • Representative members of the Salem community composed of faculty, staff, and students

April 13 – Interim President is chosen and announced soon thereafter

May 1 – Interim President begins the job

We are pleased with the speed and progress to date on the selection of an Interim President. We invite you to send your questions or inquiries to presidential.transition@salem.edu
