Office of the President
Salem Academy and College
601 South Church Street
Winston-Salem, NC 27101
Dear members of the Salem community,
On January 27, 2017, the White House issued an executive order that imposes a ninety-day suspension on the entry into the United States of nationals from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen; suspends the admission of refugees to the United States for 120 days; and indefinitely suspends the entry of Syrian refugees into this country.
Salem Academy and College stands in unity with academic and other institutions in opposing this executive order and in recognizing the valuable contributions to humanity that all people can make regardless of their religion, ethnicity, or nationality. These contributions have been vital to the health of our academic institutions, our communities, and our nation. We derive our moral values and our courage from our Moravian heritage, which steadfastly embraces diversity.
Legal challenges to the executive order are currently being pursued, and at this moment we do not know what the outcome of these challenges will be. We are acutely aware that the climate of uncertainty across the nation and around the world is causing many in our community to feel confused, overwhelmed, and distressed.
Salem will continue to do all that it can to protect the safety and welfare of all its community members. In addition, we offer many resources to support members of our community. Please do not hesitate to avail yourself of the services of any office on campus, including:
We are continuing to monitor this very fluid situation, and we will provide you with updates as they become necessary.
Sincerely yours,
Sallie Craig Huber
