Salem College is one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, according to a new survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education. The results, released in The Chronicle’s eighth annual report on The Academic Workplace, are based on a survey of 281 colleges and universities.
Survey results are compiled using a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies from each institution and a survey administered to faculty, administrators, and professional support staff. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was the feedback received from employees.
Eighty-six of the 281 institutions were recognized for specific best practices and policies. Salem is included among the small colleges and universities that are classified with 2,999 students or fewer. Salem College achieved recognition in the following categories:
Associate Professor of Business Eve Rapp is proud to be part of a strong faculty body with a mission to support Salem students in and out of the classroom. “Salem faculty provide a learning environment that develops strong, confident citizens,” she says. “We accomplish this by engaging in teaching practices that not only challenge our students to be independent, critical thinkers but also encourage them to collaborate with others to solve important problems.”
“More than 240 years ago, our first teacher, Elisabeth Oesterlein, was a pioneer in the education of young women,” says D. E. Lorraine Sterritt, PhD, President of Salem Academy and College. “From 1864 to1914, Professor Emma Lehman’s exceptional teaching across many fields of study, including literature and the sciences, epitomized the quality and scope of liberal arts education at Salem. I am proud to see that legacy continue in the faculty of Salem today.”
The Chronicle is one of the nation’s most important resources for news about colleges and universities.
“The institutions that the Great College program recognizes provide innovative educational experiences—while also offering their employees outstanding workplace experiences—and we are eager to help readers learn more about them,” says Liz McMillen, The Chronicle’s editor.
