Salem College will host a public address by Dr. Ammina Kothari, assistant professor of communication at the Rochester Institute of Technology, on Monday, October 12, 2015.

Kothari will speak at Salem as part of the Visiting International Scholar program, which is sponsored by the Office of the Dean of the College. Assistant Professor of Communications Dr. Spring-Serenity Duvall invited her to campus.

"Dr. Kothari's research provides global context to the issues that we face as members of the Salem community,” says Duvall. “Access to healthcare information, use of mobile technology, and concerns about media representations of Muslims, women, and people of color have all been important topics of conversation at Salem. Dr. Kothari will offer insight into the global scale of these concerns, with particular emphasis on her work in Africa."

Kothari received a PhD from Indiana University and is published in leading academic journals, including Journal of African and Asian Studies and Journalism Studies. She has served as an officer for the International Communications Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication for three years.

Kothari’s international media studies research focuses on Africa and the analysis of African media, Western media representations of Africa, and social media discourses about Africa. She conducts fieldwork in Africa, where she interviews journalists and leaders of non-governmental organizations. Her published work interrogates various media discourses of HIV/AIDS, rape, and Muslim identity. She is also actively involved in developing teaching techniques to globalize journalism curriculum in the United States.

Kothari will speak in Huber Theater, which is located on the bottom floor of the Salem College Student Center. This event is free and open to the public.
