As the 2011-2012 academic year draws to a close, Salem celebrates the class of 2012, along with three retiring faculty members, during special events.
The annual Fleer Center Back Porch Party honored both Fleer Center for Adult Education and traditional age seniors with food, music and a champagne toast from Salem College president, Dr. Susan Pauly. Retiring faculty members Dr. Wenzi Sun and Dr. Steve Nohlgren both served on the Order of the Cork, a high honor for faculty and staff, chosen by students. Dr. Sun, who was also presented with the distinguished H.A. Pfohl Faculty Award at Honors Convocation, is an associate professor of math. Dr. Nohlgren, professor of biology, is retiring after more than 40 years at Salem.
Dr. Nohlgren also serves as the speaker at the annual Senior Lovefeast at Home Moravian Church. The traditional Moravian event honors seniors each year.
On Friday, seniors will participate in baccalaureate, a special service held at Home Moravian Church on the evening before commencement for graduates, families and guests. Dr. Doug Borwick, professor of not-for-profit management and arts management, will be the speaker at baccalaureate. Dr. Borwick is retiring this year after more than 25 years at Salem.
