A recent article on theĀ USA TODAY College website named Salem College number two in a list of 10 Groundbreaking American Women's Colleges, above distinguished institutions such as Mount Holyoke College andĀ Spelman College.

The article credited Salem as the oldest continually running women's college, and noted the school's history as a progressive institution: "The Moravians established it with the radical belief that women and men both deserved equal educational opportunities, and also broke further ground as one of the very first institutions to accept minorities alongside whites."
