Composition Competition Honors Beloved Salem Alumna

May 18, 2011

The Margaret Vardell Sandresky Composition Competition, which honors the Salem alumna and renowned composer’s 90th birthday, is now accepting submissions of new works by composers who have not reached their 30th birthday by December 31, 2011.

Eligible works have not yet received their premier, have been composed within the last three years, are under 10 minutes in length and scored for at least two instruments from the following list: flute, piano, mezzo soprano, and cello. If the piece is text based, applicants should submit a letter confirming that the rights have either already been secured, or are in the public domain.

Applicants should send four copies of a professional-quality score with a matching CD recording, if available (midi recordings accepted). No other medium for recording will be accepted.  Additional supporting materials should include a resume of compositional activity and complete contact information.  Any submissions scored for instruments not on the list above will not be considered.

The winning composer will receive $500.00 and a professional recording of the premier, which will take place on October 1, 2011 at Salem College. If the composer is unable to attend the premier, other planned events will include them. No travel expenses can be provided, however room and board might be arranged. No materials will be returned without a specific request and an SASE. Deadline for submissions is July 1.

Applicants should send four sets of materials to:
