Hannah Ainsworth C’10 recently had an article entitled “Identification of Ginsenosides in American Ginseng Seedlings” published in Explorations: the Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities for the State of North Carolina.

Ainsworth’s faculty mentor for the study and article was Dr. Nita Eskew, associate professor of chemistry and director of the Women in Science and Mathematics program at Salem.  Also contributing were students Rachand Gywali C’10, L. Tiara Murphy C’10 and Smriti Sharma C’10.

The study focused upon the presence of six dominate ginsenosides, or therapeutic compounds, in the leaves and roots of American ginseng grown in North Carolina. Ainsworth and her colleagues first presented the study as part of Salem’s annual Celebration of Academic Excellence Day last spring.
