Salem has one of the oldest January Term programsin the country, begun in the early 1970s, and for years Salem students have used the time for in-depth study, internships, travel abroad and other one-of-a-kind opportunities.
This January Salem has five overseas study trips that are all fully enrolled: one to Ireland to explore spirituality, with our chaplain; one to Italy to explore soccer and volley ball with the athletic staff; a trip to Argentina with a business and an art professor to study the marketing and branding of the country through its business, art, food, wine and culture; a course and trip that contrasts the arts environments of Winston-Salem (home of the country's first arts council) and New York City, with "inside" tours of museums; and a trip/course to Vienna with one of our history professors.
Salem will also host a number of in-depth courses on campus, from issues of death and dying, to personal finance and Jane Austen and Edith Wharton on page and screen. Students are allowed with departmental approval to design their own internships and courses. One such student will be going to London to do a business internship with a metals company; another will be working with disadvantaged children in Nepal. Others are working in Alaska, in Winston-Salem nonprofits and at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in science/medical areas.
