Between August and November 2018, art historian and former vice president of Old Salem Museums and Gardens Paula Locklair inventoried the furniture, art, and artifacts owned by Salem Academy and College. Paula’s extensive experience includes 46 years at Old Salem, specifically with Moravian collections and cultural history.
In November 2018, President Sandra J. Doran convened the Art and Artifacts Committee, made up of representatives from faculty, staff, alumnae, and trustees, under Paula’s leadership. The committee worked carefully and diligently to identify the objects that were deemed to be saleable and those that should be kept because of their historic importance to the school. This is a process regularly undertaken by many institutions.
An auction, primarily of fine arts from the collection, will be held at Brunk Auctions in Asheville, North Carolina during its spring auction from May 17 through May 19, 2019.
This is an invaluable opportunity to support the College and Academy and to acquire significant mementos from Salem’s history.
