Salem College Library seeks a recent MLS graduate interested in a career in academic librarianship for a three year Diversity Residency program. The program is designed to provide the Resident Librarian with an immersive experience in research assistance and instruction, outreach, scholarly communication, and other opportunities to participate in projects related to other areas of professional interest. The Resident Librarian will also gain experience in research, scholarship, and service to the Library, College, and profession. Participation in the Diversity Alliance will provide the benefit of learning from other academic libraries who have been engaged in residency programs for several years. This cohort approach will allow residents to share their networks, connect at conferences, facilitate a deeper understanding of the profession and prepare them for success in scholarship, professional service, and leadership.

This position is classified as a Professional Librarian position and reports to the Director of Libraries. The Resident Librarian will also work with two other professional librarians, two professional staff, a part time professional staff member, and several student workers and interns.  Salem College librarians and staff like experimenting and engaging in ongoing discussions about the future of academic librarianship. They enjoy working with faculty and students in their research, teaching, and learning endeavors. Professional Librarians are members of the faculty, serve on faculty committees, and are eligible for professional development funds.

  • Provides for-credit and blended information literacy and research instruction in both online and traditional environments to students and faculty.
  • Operates as the instruction and assessment liaison to the Salem general education curriculum and first year courses.
  • Works as a liaison to specific subject disciplines and to the campus diversity office.
  • Collaborates with campus partners to support faculty and students.
  • Coordinates outreach events and projects.
  • Acts as administrator and coordinator of content for a suite of online research and learning platforms and services.
  • Contributes to the University’s diversity and inclusion goals.
  • Participates in library, university, professional committees, and/or community-engaged projects.

Required Qualifications:

  •   Recent or upcoming graduate (with less than three years of professional experience) from an ALA-accredited Master’s degree program or from a program in a country with a formal accreditation process as identified by ALA
  •   Interest in a career in academic librarianship
  •   Enthusiasm for teaching, and knowledge of instructional approaches
  •   Demonstrated knowledge and experience with equity, diversity and inclusion
  •   Good critical thinking skills
  •   Ability to commit to goals and achieve established outcomes
  •   Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  •   Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment as well as the ability to work independently
  •   Knowledge of reference services and sources
  •   Knowledge of information and digital technologies
  •   Commitment to professional achievement and growth

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience providing blended information literacy instruction
  • Demonstrated ability with information literacy assessment in a higher education environment
  • Demonstrated success with outreach activities and partnerships in an academic environment

This is a three-year term Professional Librarian position. Salary of the successful candidate depends upon experience and professional achievements.
