Position Summary:
The Director of Student Support and Conduct promotes retention and continuity of care for Salem College students. This position will be responsible for coordinating the efforts of various student-facing offices and connecting students to resources, both on campus and off campus. Additionally, this officer will serve as a primary resource for student conduct, serving as a Title IX deputy officer and the advisor to Salem College’s student Judicial Council.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Student Advocacy
- Serves as a case manager by connecting students needing support in areas beyond the normal scope of the college to resources off-campus (longer-term counseling, off-campus food pantries, etc.)
- Provides one-on-one needs assessment and develops a written student service plan to document goals, objectives, outcomes, and detailed case notes
- Serves as a liaison, connecting at-risk students to on-campus and community support services ranging from academic assistance to community, food, and housing services.
- Co-manages retention and initiatives such as the institution’s early alert system and the student concern process alongside other student affairs staff and campus partners
- Track and assess student retention based on metrics developed with the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs and the Director of Institutional Research
- Work in collaboration with Academic Affairs and Student Affairs staff to design and facilitate retention-oriented programming.
- Works with students of concern to navigate administrative processes, refer students to appropriate college and community resources, advocate for student needs, and connect them to intervention resources.
- In collaboration with the Institutional Research Director, oversees data collection and data analysis to determine withdrawal and completion rates and identify strategies for retention and persistence
- Help maintain campus food pantry
Student Conduct/Title IX Coordination
- Assists with individual and group crisis and emergency situations, providing mediation and other informed intervention to assist students in resolving conflict.
- Adjudicates and investigates student conduct and behavior assessment cases in conjunction with other institutional departments such as Residence Life and Counseling Services
- Advises student Judicial Council in adjudicating alleged violations of Social Responsibility and Residence Life policies
- Work with the Dean of Students on the judicial and honor code processes
- Serves as the case manager and university representative for Title IX cases
- Maintains current knowledge of and implements changes based on university policies and procedures, laws, and best practices related to the field. Participates in professional development activities as appropriate.
- Keep accurate student conduct files.
- Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
General
- Participates in Student Affairs professional staff on-call emergency response rotation at the director level
- Coordinates with the Dean of Students, the Dean of the College, and other stakeholders to advise on institutional policy pertaining to student success and student conduct
- Reports to the Dean of Students and the Dean of the College
- Performs other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Strong computer skills to include proficiency in the following: Google suite, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel, and the ability to conduct Internet research.
- Demonstrated ability to handle complex situations, particularly situations with a high level of confidentiality
- Ability to conduct interviews and investigations using trauma-informed techniques when appropriate.
- Must possess the skills to collaborate, communicate and cooperatively work with faculty, staff and administration, and students
- Possess excellent written and interpersonal skills. Must have experience presenting to small and large groups
- Ability to deal effectively with confidential information
- Ability to work extended hours (nights and weekends), as needed
- Must have a valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving records
Physical Functions:
While performing the responsibilities of this position, the employee is required to travel moderate distances around campus to meet and communicate with employees, students, and other campus constituents in the performance of the essential duties and responsibilities; to work at a computer for extended periods of time; receive detailed information through auditory and oral communication; to express and exchange ideas by means of spoken word; and to work on campus and in an office setting.
