Position Summary

Salem Academy and College announces an opening for the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations.  Reporting to the VP of Institutional Advancement, the position enhances Salem Academy and College’s efforts to secure major gifts primarily from foundations and corporations.  The Director will accomplish this goal by facilitating, managing and cultivating active relationships between Salem and key foundations and corporations. The Director also coordinates both federal and state government grants.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serves as the primary institution liaison with foundations, corporations, and government entities.

  • Identifies funding opportunities, develops strategies, and prepares proposals for organizations whose funding purposes most closely parallel Salem’s identified priority needs.

  • Identifies common links and works to align institutional priorities and corporate and foundations funding interests.

  • Utilizes technology to build efficient and effective grant writing and cultivation strategies, reports, and evaluation of efforts.

  • Manages and implements an effective proposal review process which includes the submission of proposals on a regular basis.

  • Manages the tracking and reporting process for foundation, corporate, and government proposals.

  • Coordinates the preparation of academic proposals with the Academic Dean’s office and appropriate faculty.

  • Coordinates external fundraising efforts with the Academic Dean’s office and participating student groups.

  • Researches and develops programs and priorities for funding.

  • Coordinates and implements the stewardship process and prepares reports due for foundation, corporate, and government grants.

  • Enlists the help of board members in personal contacts with foundations and corporations.

  • Encourages and prepares campus site visits for representatives of foundations and corporations.

  • Maintains foundation and corporation files and resource materials.

  • Manages acknowledgement process for all foundation and corporation gifts.

  • Represents Salem in the greater community, serving on appropriate boards and committees.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and a minimum of at least five (5) years of professional fundraising experience, with emphasis on major gifts, preferably in higher education; or an equivalent combination of experience.

  • A proven successful track record of soliciting and closing major gifts, recruiting and managing volunteers, and cultivation of major donors and donor prospects, is highly desirable.

  • Demonstrated success in research and proposal writing.

  • Strong computer skills to include: Word and Excel and the ability to conduct Internet research.

  • Skilled use of Microsoft Office software, as well as presentation and website applications expected. Experience with Raisers’ Edge is preferred.

  • Ability to be analytical, use and generate statistical information for tracking and reporting on overall donor activity and giving results.

  • Strong organizational and planning skills, attention to detail and ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills; must possess the skills to collaborate, communicate and cooperatively work with faculty, staff and administration.

  • Strong written and presentation skills with proven success in soliciting funds. 

  • Proven record of successful leadership and performance at a senior level within an organization, with such experience at an educational institution preferred.

  • Committed to the values and environment of an educational institution and its mission and goals.

  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment with fluctuating priorities and deadlines

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise effective independent judgment and efficiently manage tasks and time.

  • Ability to deal effectively with confidential information.

  • Ability to travel extensively. If driving personal or Salem vehicle on institutional business, a valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record are required.
