Salem Academy and College, the oldest continuously operating educational institution for girls and women in the country by its founding date of 1772, invites applications for a College Counselor and Student Engagement Coordinator. Our ideal candidate is a 10 or 11-month faculty member reporting to the Director of Curriculum and Instruction & College Counseling.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

College Counselor

• Define the college counseling program by grade and objective areas (personality, strengths, career and college goals).
• Create a four-year integrative approach to meet holistic college and career objectives including workshops, seminars, evening programs and individual college counseling.
• Engage with College Admissions Personnel
• Attend regional, national and other college admissions counseling events such as NACAC, SACAC, College Board & NCAIS as they occur
• Host Salem Academy fall college representative visits
• Attend college visits-throughout the year through fly-ins and other campus tour opportunities.
• Maintain College Counseling Platform: SCOIR
• Follow Current trends in the education and the college admissions process
• Create School Profile

Student Engagement Coordinator

• Oversee planning and coordination of student service in freshmen and sophomore year
• Oversee internship program for juniors and seniors
• Oversee independent study courses

General Responsibilities

• Maintain communication with parents
• Serve as a faculty advisor to student clubs and organizations as assigned.
• Participate in faculty meetings and curriculum development discussions.
• Chaperone student activities (on- and off-campus) as needed.
• Attend Assembly and other Salem Academy events 
• Adhere to school guidelines regarding grading and other recordkeeping duties.
• Maintain regular contact with academic advisors, students, and their families.
• Comply with all rules and regulations established as school policy.
• Work effectively with other faculty, staff, and administration at the Academy and College.

• Ability to provide instruction remotely if and/or when the need arises
• Develop and maintain a course site in Google Classroom. 
• Ability to use Google Suite products.

Administrative Duties:

• Work with the Head of School and Director of Curriculum and Instruction 

Additional Duties (as assigned) may include:

• The ability to provide supervision in the Academy dormitory during the school day until 5:00 p.m. on some days
• Attend and support school events that occur after hours and on weekends.
• Perform all other duties appropriate to employment as determined by the Head of School.

Required Qualifications:

• Masters’ Degree
• 3-5 years experience in college admissions or counseling
• Knowledge of a wide range of universities, including Ivy League, NESCACs, State University systems, and overseas universities
• Experience teaching or working in an independent, private, boarding, college preparatory, or like-kind school setting
• Exceptional public speaking, writing, organization, and communication skills
• Ability to perform well under pressure and to meet deadlines
• Experience interacting with young adults and their families, school administration, and college admissions offices
• Ability to read people well, communicate clearly and firmly, and exercise both discretion and transparency
• Sensitivity, openness, and approachability
• Strong references that convey your college counseling abilities
• Skills, talents, and flexibility for contributing to the independent school community in additional capacities. For example: Coaching sports, advising extracurricular activities, supervising a dorm at a boarding school, etc.
• Competency with educational technology, including Zoom, Google Suite, and online learning management platforms.
• Ability to crossover teaching between the Academy and the College.
• Actively consider college counseling and student engagement through the lenses of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Project management, organizational, and leadership skills.
• Collaborative, growth-oriented, and motivated to continue developing as a teacher.
• Excellent interpersonal skills for interacting with students, parents, and colleagues.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Masters degree in education specifically counseling or educational leadership

Physical Functions:

While performing the responsibilities of the College Counselor and Student Engagement Coordinator, the employee is required to sit for varying lengths of time; bend, reach, lift, push, and pull up to 25 pounds; occasionally stand, walk, and kneel and regularly ascend/descend stairs; use hands and fingers to handle or feel and manipulate keys on a keyboard; perform extended periods of work at a computer workstation, viewing computer monitor; perceive sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction and receive detailed information through oral communication; express and exchange ideas using spoken word, and work in an office setting.
