Salem Academy and College invites applications for a full-time faculty position in Open Rank Professor of Health Law and Policy. This tenure-track position is scheduled to begin in August 2023. We are seeking a faculty member with undergraduate teaching expertise in health law and policy. Further, we seek applicants who have a demonstrated commitment to educating a diverse student body and facilitating efforts in diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Salem Academy and College is the oldest continuously operating educational institution for girls and women in the country by its founding date of 1772. The institution is currently celebrating its 250th anniversary and is engaging in transformational change to innovate in women’s education. Salem Academy is a college preparatory school located on a diverse, active college campus focused on preparing young women for careers in STEAM. Salem College is the nation’s only liberal arts college exclusively dedicated to developing the next generation of women in health leadership. Salem Academy and College is located in Winston Salem, North Carolina, a vibrant college town known for arts and innovation.
The position will contribute to the institutional focus on educating students in a range of liberal arts programs related to health leadership. The appointment will be housed in the Social Sciences Division, which includes interdisciplinary degree programs in Health Communication and Health Advocacy and Humanitarian Systems as well as programs in Communication and Media Studies; Political Science; Nonprofit Management, Sociology and Criminology; Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. The ideal candidate will complement existing faculty expertise in health communication, trans policy and rights, equity and access, community organizing, substance abuse interventions, crime studies, and maternal health and breastfeeding.
Successful candidates will be able to articulate the importance of a robust liberal arts education as preparation for law school as well as other career paths students may pursue after graduation.
The division is particularly interested in candidates whose expertise includes law and policy related to health equity, disparities, access, justice, and ethics.
This position will involve development and teaching of primarily undergraduate courses and involvement in other administrative tasks related to teaching. The successful candidate will also advise the Salem College Pre-Law Society and work to build partnerships with institutions and organizations that bolster student opportunities.
Existing courses the ideal candidate might teach include: Introduction to Public Policy; Ethics and Public Policy; Quantitative Methods; Research Capstone; History of US Health Policy. Potential new courses that would complement the Salem College curriculum include: Bioethics and Law; Health Law; additional classes in the candidate’s areas of expertise that enhance current curricula.
