PDF Fill-In Forms

The Goal

As we attempt to reduce our carbon footprint and realize a less-paper (on our way to paperless) institution, we've begun to use PDFs that can be filled in electronically.

The Problem

This sounds great on (or off) paper, but unfortunately Adobe Reader won't allow you to save the filled-in data. This means you can't save your answers and then email the document directly using only electronic media.

The Solution(s)

For Windows Users

  • Use Foxit Reader
    • Allows you to save filled-in data
    • Loads quick and takes only a small amount of disk space
    • My favorite PDF Reader on Windows
  • Print to PDF using doPDF
    • Print almost anything to a PDF
    • Keep an electronic "hard copy" of documents
    • Use when you don't have immediate access to a printer

For Mac Users

  • Use Preview
    • Allows you to save filled-in data
    • Loads quick and comes with Mac OS X
    • My favorite PDF Reader on Mac
  • Print to PDF
    • Comes with Mac OS X
    • Keep an electronic "hard copy" of documents
    • Use when you don't have immediate access to a printer

†For those of you that think it's strange to print a PDF to a PDF... You're right it is, but it is a good work-around to this problem.
