Advice for students:

Often new students don't think of creative writing as technical and have the misconception that it is “flowery”—and although I don't quite know what that means, it seems to indicate insubstantial. However it is a serious craft, so it's best to go in knowing, along with the opportunity to express all the vibrant and vital imaginings of your inner life, you will also be acquiring a real skill that can be applied across professions. There's a narrative behind just about everything we do!
