January Term Italian Adventure

For this coming January term Dr. Reeves Shulstad and Prof. Barbara Caprilli are organizing a trip to the beautiful and exciting country of Italy. Due to fluctuations in the exchange rate right now it is difficult to be exact with the price, but the trip will come in between $2,500 and $3,500. We will be visiting Rome, Pompeii, Florence, Bologna and Milan, with an extra side trip to Spoleto and the Etruscan tombs outside of Rome should anyone be interested. The trip will include tickets to a Musical Theatre show (in Italian), an Opera, and an Orchestra Concert, and we will be visiting art museums in Rome, Florence, Bologna and Milan, as well as cityDuomo Milano tours of all the cities visited. We will have tickets to a Papal Audience, as well as Sunday Mass at the Vatican, and there will also be a tour of the parts of the Vatican catacombs not usually open to tourists. Another special feature is the chance to learn about Italian regional cooking, in four special dinners in great Restaurants in Rome, Florence, Bologna and Milan (there will be vegetarian choices; being a vegetarian is easy in Italy!). Other options include a possible side trip to the Bruno Magli Factory store in Bologna, and any singers who go can set up coachings with famous coaches in Bologna and Rome.

As many of you know, Prof. Caprilli  traveled all over Italy and the world as an opera singer. She speaks fluent Italian and will be the tour guide in ColosseoBologna, Florence and Milan. She is also an expert in Italian culture and cuisine, as well as Opera and Musical Theatre. The Art Department is generously sharing their notes for several of the museums we will be visiting on this trip.

Dr. Reeves Shulstad  will instruct the students on the background, style and structure of the music they hear as well as place it in its cultural context. She will also discuss how Italy and the particular cities they are visiting fit into music history, for example the importance of the orchestra in Milan in the development of the symphony during the 18th century and will provide guidelines for and evaluate the Concert Reviews the students write about the performances they attend.

If you are interested in having more information about this trip, please send an email to caprilli@salem.edu and we will create an email list to keep you informed as more exact information on prices, down payments and an exact itinerary becomes available.
