Parking Regulations
The following rules and regulations shall apply to all students, guests & visitors who operate vehicles on Salem Academy and College property. Rules and regulations are enforced 24 hours a day 365-days a year including registration, graduation, break periods & holidays. Parking is permitted in designated areas only.

Salem Academy and College parking, traffic and safety regulations are issued supplementary to all applicable North Carolina State laws Ordinances, which are enforced by the Salem Public Safety Department. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Public Safety at 5555.

Vehicle Registration
All faculty, staff and students of Salem Academy and College are required to register their vehicle with Salem Public Safety within 48 hours upon arrival on campus. Vehicle registration should be completed during registration for classes. Vehicle registration fees must be paid at the time you register your vehicle. All fees must be paid at the Business Office. The Public Safety Department will not accept payment by cash or credit card, but will accept personal checks made payable to Salem College after regular Business Office hours.

All Students: Full Year- $40.00 One Term- $25.00

If any vehicle other than the originally registered vehicle is brought to campus, a temporary parking permit must be obtained within 24 hours. Failure to register your vehicle will result in a fine of $25.00. Vehicle registration is NOT complete until the parking sticker is displayed on the right rear bumper or window of your vehicle.

Visitors & Guests of Students
Each student is responsible for the conduct of their visitors and guests. Students must ensure the behavior of their visitors and guests does not violate College & Academy rules and regulations including traffic regulations. Visitor and guest parking areas are located in the Salem Fine Arts Center and on front campus. All overnight visitors must be registered with the Department of Public Safety upon their arrival. Any visitor or guest that plans to stay overnight must register their vehicle with Public Safety at no cost. Temporary permits are available at the Public Safety Office.

No parking at anytime in the fire lane. Violations of this state law will be enforced by The Department of Public Safety, Winston Salem Police Department and the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

NOTE: STUDENTS ARE SUBJECT TO FINES FOR ANY VIOLATIONS THEIR GUESTS OR VISITORS OBTAIN.

Resident Student Parking Regulations
Residential student parking is allowed in the Pitt Parking Area only. The only students allowed to park in the Fine Arts Parking Area are senior resident students, continuing educational program participants and Fogle Flat residents. Any underclass residential student parking in the FAC will receive a ticket. In addition, no parking is allowed at any time in the two spaces in the Admissions Lot. These two spaces are located behind the office and posted.

  1. FIRE LANES: State law.
  2. FRONT CAMPUS/HISTORICAL DISTRICT OF OLD SALEM* AND ADMISSIONS: Parking is permitted on front campus Monday through Thursday 8:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. on Sun.**, and Sun. from 1:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. on Monday. Parking on front campus is a privilege and is often reserved for official functions of the college. For this reason you may choose not to park on front campus.

    *Front Campus/Historic District of Old Salem is designated as the following areas: Church St., West St., Main St., Bank St., Academy St., Blum St., Salt St., Race St., Walnut St.

    **Beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings, Public Safety will issue a ticket to all resident student cars parked on front campus. If cars are not removed promptly, a second ticket will be issued for $50.00.
  3. RESIDENT HALL DIRECTOR'S PARKING AREA: Located across from physical plant.
  4. FACULTY/STAFF PARKING AREAS: Located in the Salem Fine Arts Center and faculty/staff gym area. EXCEPTION-students may park in these areas only on weekend's after 5 p.m. on Fridays until 9 p.m. on Sundays.
  5. INSTITUTIONAL PARKING AREA: Located behind Corrin Refectory.
  6. HANDICAPPED PARKING AREA: Student must obtain special permission from Public Safety in order to park in this area.
  7. LOADING ZONES: Located behind Corrin Refectory and Hanes House.
  8. RESERVED PARKING AREAS: Located behind Inspectors House.
  9. INFIRMARY (MEDICAL STAFF) PARKING AREA: Unless student has special permission from Public Safety Department.
  10. MAINTENANCE HILL, the drive behind Gramley Dorm and the side drive to Babcock Dorm are no longer available due to life, safety, and fire code.

Continuing Studies Student Parking
Continuing Studies student parking is located on front campus (Old Salem Historic District) and in the Salem Fine Arts Center parking lot. The following are areas where Continuing Studies students may NOT park:

  1. FIRE LANES: State law.
  2. RESIDENT STUDENT PARKING AREA: Located behind Gramley Dorm.
  3. RHD PARKING AREA: Located beside of Strong Dorm.
  4. FACULTY/STAFF PARKING AREAS: EXCEPTION - On weekends from Friday after 5 p.m. until Sunday at 9 p.m.
  5. INSTITUTIONAL PARKING AREA: Located beside Corrin Refectory.
  6. HANDICAPPED PARKING AREAS: Unless student has special permission from Public Safety.
  7. LOADING ZONES: Located behind Corrin Refectory `and Hanes House.
  8. RESERVED PARKING AREAS: Located behind Inspectors House. EXCEPTION - after 5 p. m.
  9. ADMISSIONS PARKING LOT: Located behind Admissions Office.
  10. INFIRMARY (MEDICAL STAFF) PARKING AREA: Located on Church Street. Students need to obtain permission from Public Safety.

List of Violations and Fines
Every person who parks or drives his or her motor vehicle in violation of the stated regulations is subject to ticketing by an authorized Public Safety Officer and is responsible for payment of the fine indicated by the violation. All fines must be paid within 14 days. Payment after such time will result in an additional late fee of $ 5.00.

Violations and Fines are as follows:

  1. Parking in the Old Salem Historic District. FINE: $15.00
  2. Parking in Old Salem Historic District on Sunday Morning. FINE: $50.00
  3. Parking in reserved parking areas. FINE: $15.00
  4. Parking in fire lanes. FINE: $25.00
  5. Parking in medical staff parking area. FINE: $15.00
  6. Operating or parking a vehicle on pedestrian path, sidewalk or grass. FINE: $15.00
  7. Failure to stop or otherwise heed instruction of a Public Safety Officer. FINE: $25.00
  8. Operating a vehicle in the wrong way on a ONE WAY street. FINE: $15.00
  9. Operating a vehicle without responsible regard for safety*. FINE: $15.00
    *Violation of city ordinance, operating or parking so as to obstruct traffic or threaten public safety, parking in a non-designated area, parking in two or more parking spaces, parking too close to another vehicle preventing owner of parked vehicle to gain entry into their vehicle.
  10. Failure to register a vehicle. Registration is NOT complete until the parking sticker is displayed on the right rear bumper of your vehicle. FINE: $25.00
  11. Parking in a handicapped space. FINE: $250.00. No student is allowed in sleep in a car. If such is the case, then one of the following penalties will be issued A. Fifty dollar fine; B. Inactive suspension.

Parking Violations Appeals Process
Students who wish to appeal a parking fine must do the following:

  1. You may obtain a form from the Public Safety Office. Appeals will not be accepted unless they are written or typed on an appeals form.
  2. Attach parking ticket to your appeals form.
  3. Parking Appeals must be submitted to the Public Safety Office no later than 14 business days after the ticket was issued. This date is on the ticket.
  4. Your appeal will be reviewed by the Parking Appeals Committee members. You will be notified of the status of your appeal after the Parking Appeals Committee makes final decisions. No member of the Department of Public Safety serves on the Appeals Committee and no Officer can void a duly issued citation.

Excessive Ticket Accumulation
Any student that receives 4 or more tickets in an academic school year will receive an increase of her fines. The fourth and each subsequent ticket will carry a fine of $50.00.

Penalty for Unpaid Parking Fines
Students who fail to pay any parking fines may not register for classes, receive grade transcripts or diplomas.
