Careers in Music:

Potential music majors may be concerned with the appearance of limited career opportunities in music. Again, the skills honed while completing a BM degree are marketable in a variety of settings. In addition, students can take advantage of minoring in one of Salem's other highly regarded academic areas, some of which are directly related to the music major. For example, I took many classes in psychology and now do research in auditory perception, including music perception and performance. In view of the many benefits of a BM degree, potential music students should ask themselves, "Why NOT major in music?"
– Barbara Acker-Mills C'92 Professor of Psychology, Auburn University

One of the great things about Salem’s music alumnae is that their education has been of such quality they are able to pursue careers in other fields. Here are some examples:

• Lilli Moore, speech therapist
• Janice Safrit, librarian
• Donna Byrd, computer technology
• Josephine Peoples, economist
• Professor of Psychology, Auburn University
