Joan Jacobowsky
Joan Jacobowsky’s students include such outstanding
professionals as Meribeth Bunch, author of Dynamics of the Singing Voice;
Lynn Cole Adcock and Patti Hay Peterson, both professors of voice at major
universities; and countless music educators at schools and colleges across
the country. Salem’s music students benefit from Ms. Jacobowsky’s
introducing the Alexander Technique at Salem, a method teaching the body
to relax during performances and times of stress.
Active in the National Association of Teachers of Singing,
Joan Jacobowsky has been soloist and vocal clinician in a number of churches
in the state. An experienced director of musical theater, she has recently
given programs of the songs of Gershwin, Carmichael, Ellington, and Sondheim.
Ms. Jacobowsky earned degrees at the Juilliard School of Music and Columbia
University. She studied with Edith Piper, William Vennard, Pierre Bernac,
Oren Brown, and John Wustman. Ever the student, to increase her knowledge
of vocal production, she devoted a sabbatical to the study of gross anatomy
at a medical college.
