The School of Music

Music stands at the center of the liberal arts education. The ancient Greeks recognized the study of music as a powerful means of developing mind, body, and spirit. The Salem College School of Music has the distinction of being one of the oldest fully accredited professional music schools in the country. As such, Salem offers the student a unique opportunity to prepare for a professional position in performance and teaching, while experiencing the comprehensive development found within the context of a liberal arts college.

Opportunities for musical study within the School of Music, however, are not limited to pre-professional training. Involvement in music can take various forms, including the following: the bachelor of music degree, providing intensive training for performance and teaching positions; the bachelor of arts degree with a major in music; the bachelor of arts degree with a double major, consisting of the degree requirements in music together with those of another major; and the bachelor of arts degree in arts management with a concentration in performing arts. Students may also earn a bachelor of arts with a minor in music or a minor in music theater with voice emphasis. Classes in organ, piano, and voice as well as private lessons are offered to non-majors and majors.

The School of Music supports a variety of music education programs through the Salem College Community Music School, including private lessons, group instruction, and chamber music ensembles. The Community Music School's Early Childhood Music Program offers classes for infants, toddlers, and young children. Students have the opportunity to observe and participate in Community Music School and Early Childhood Music classes and lessons as part of their training.

Prospective Students interested in the School of Music are encouraged to fill out the Music Program Interest form in the Admissions section.
