A Message from Coach Handy

Welcome! This year will make my second year coaching softball at Salem College and I am thoroughly excited. The school motto “Reach Within. Shape the Future.” is how I am approaching this year and the years to come. I am focused on building this program from the bottom up. We are working on developing the foundation to be laid for years to come.

Softball is a wonderful sport and has a great future here at Salem College. My philosophy is to not yet focus on winning every game; because that will come. Rather, I want to establish expectations with the team. I believe in working together with the team in laying the foundation for this program. Softball is a wonderful sport and has a great future here at Salem College.

I love the fact that no two players are alike. However, to enjoy playing the sport, they all need to love the sport. Their love is their common bond that will keep them together and build a strong tradition here. They are setting a standard for future Salem women because they not only work hard on the field, but also in the classroom.

In the near future, the softball program will not be the same. Players will cone and go, but they all have something in common: They all love the game and were a part of something great here at Salem College. They were a part of the softball program in its infant stages of the NCAA Division III process. They have their chapter in history here at Salem College and no one can change it. The new chapters are to be written by the dedicated incoming student athlete who loves the game, wants to compete, and can “reach within and shape the future.”
