Tuition & Financial Aid

Salem is dedicated to admitting qualified students and working with individual families to meet financial needs. Through need-based grants, low-interest loans, work-study programs, merit-based scholarships, and payment plans, Salem makes every effort to meet financial concerns and tailor a financial aid package to suit each individual.

Financial aid has met more than half of the monetary needs of current Salem students. The tuition and cost for a Salem student living on campus during the 2005-06 school year is $26,226. The breakdown of these costs is as follows:

Room and Board: $9,251

70% of students receive financial aid.
The average financial aid award is $14,404.

Salem is proud of the fact that Money Magazine ranked Salem as the third "best buy" among women's colleges in the nation the past several years. Salem has been among the top 10 women's colleges seven years in a row.

Applying For Financial Aid:

Eligibility for financial aid from Salem is determined by your documented financial need: the difference between Salem's total cost and what your family can contribute. This need is determined when you fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Salem's financial aid office figures need by adhering to a standard formula. Determining factors include taxable and nontaxable income, assets, family size, number of dependents in college, and unusual circumstances.

Loan Information:

Salem College participates in the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP) which includes Federal Stafford Loans and Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS). To be eligible for these loans, you must first complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). After completing the FAFSA and turning in all the necessary documents, you will receive an award letter stating the Stafford loan type and amount you are eligible for. If your parents are interested in the PLUS loan, they must request it separately.

When you apply for the loan we will mail you several forms to complete. During the process, you will need to select a lender from our preferred list of lenders below. You can find out more about what they can offer you by going directly to their web site or by calling the Financial Aid Office and requesting a FFELP Fact Sheet.
