Special Academic Programs

The Salem College of today is a continuation of a long history and commitment to the education of women. It places a premium on meeting the special interests and needs of every student. The curriculum offers special opportunities and programs and allows students to plan an educational program consistent with her life goals. Salem students participate in the Salem Signature program and have opportunities for independent study, off-campus study, study abroad, internships and much more.


Center for Women Writers
Salem's Center for Women Writers provides an opportunity for women to express their creativity in conversation and through the written word. The Center encourages participation by all those interested in writing, in various genres of expression, and in publishing their work. Through lectures and readings by acclaimed women writers as well as workshops and community courses taught by experienced professionals, Salem students derive first-hand knowledge of the creative process, writing techniques, and the publication process.


Creative Writing Minor
In conjunction with the Center for Women Writers, the department of English offers a minor in creative writing:

Honors Program
Salem College offers a formal honors program of courses and independent study that gives exceptionally talented students the opportunity to do honors-level work in a variety of fields.

Aside from the honors independent study courses offered by the academic departments, honors course offerings are coordinated by the honors program committee. Each semester two such courses are offered. A student who completes the program will be graduated with College honors. A student may also be graduated with departmental honors.


Internships
Salem College provides internship opportunities for students to link their academic work with practical experience in a variety of career areas. Qualified students may take internships during the regular term as well as during the January Term and in the summer. Several academic programs at Salem require internships as an integral part of the student's program: American studies, arts management, communication, interior design and music.


Political Science Minor
The department of history and political science offers a minor in political science. This program of study includes the politics of America, Europe, and the international order. It also includes the problems of conflict, of society's organization, and of the policy-making process both here and abroad. The study of politics is meant to prepare the student for advanced study or for a professional career.


Teacher Education
The teacher education program at Salem is built upon a firm foundation in the liberal arts. There is no major in education at Salem; each student must meet the college's general education requirements as well as the requirements for a major in an academic discipline. Teacher Licensure is offered in elementary education (K-6) and secondary education, and in the special areas of learning disabilities and second languages (French, Spanish). Secondary education (9-12) programs are offered in biology, chemistry, English, mathematics, and social studies. Salem's teacher education program has been approved by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the North Carolina State Board of Education, making it possible for graduates to be licensed in approximately 42 states.

Pre-Professional Programs
In addition to career development programs and business and graduate school advising, Salem offers students preprofessional programs in law, medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and engineering.


Student-Designed Major
The student designed major provides an opportunity for a student with particular academic interests to pursue an individual plan of study by combining courses in two or more disciplines. A student interested in developing a student-designed major should meet with at least one faculty member from each discipline in the proposed major to discuss her tentative program. Our academic catalog provides a complete description of the requirements for this major.


Women's Studies
The interdisciplinary minor in women's studies is offered to Salem students who wish to explore the new scholarship on women. Basic issued addressed are sex roles; the concepts of femininity and masculinity; women's roles in society, past and present; women and work; feminist theory; the image of women in literature; and women and religion. Courses are selected from the areas of English, history, philosophy, psychology, religion, and sociology, as well as women's studies. Additionally, students are free to select women's studies courses at Wake Forest University.
