Salem College received a generous gift that will endow travel assistance for generations of Salem students. The E.Sue Cox Shore A ’37 C’41 and Richard E. Shore, Sr. Endowed Fund for Student Travel is established in memory of an outstanding alumna and her husband by their four children, Richard (“Ricky”) E. Shore Jr., Marty Shore Edwards, Nancy Shore Ferguson C’71 and Susan Shore Schwartz   C’69.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Shore served on the Salem Academy and College Board of Trustees and maintained a strong commitment to Salem and its mission to educate women. In designing this fund, the Shore children wanted to create a lasting memorial to their parents in a place with strong ties to both their family and their Moravian heritage.

An advocate of the value of experiential learning in creating a well-rounded student , Mrs. Shore served many years as a travel director and coordinated summer excursions to the Western United States for teens. This fund’s emphasis on travel honors that legacy, as well.

“We believe the combination of Salem College’s student travel needs, linked with our parents’ interests in Salem and in the benefits of travel make this a well-suited gift,” says Marty Shore Edwards.

Salem College President Dr. Susan Pauly believes the gift will help Salem meet the goals for academic excellence as outlined in the proposed Strategic Plan 2013-2016, which calls for Salem College to offer significant international experiences to prepare students for a rapidly changing global society.

"This generous gift will have an impact on young women for years to come,” says Dr. Pauly. “Students will have the opportunity to travel, expand their world outlook and participate in international service projects and internships. This new endowment serves as an extraordinary tribute to Richard E. and E. Sue Shore, and we're deeply grateful to Richard E. Shore, Jr., Marty Shore Edwards, Nancy Shore Ferguson  and Susan Shore Schwartz for this wonderful gift."
