Honors Abound at Sandresky Event
It was a night of honors at the Margaret Vardell Sandresky 90th birthday concert celebration on October 1. Sandresky, esteemed Salem alumna, Professor Emerita of Music at Salem College and internationally recognized composer, was presented with The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, one of the highest honors the governor can bestow on a North Carolina citizen. She also received a special proclamation from the mayor of Winston-Salem, Allen Joines.
Also during the event, the winner of the annual Margaret Vardell Sandresky National Composition Competition was announced. Joseph Eidson of New Cumberland, Pa., won the competition with the composition “Trio No. 3, ‘Along the Riverbank’ for Violin, Cello and Piano,” which premiered during the event. Eidson is a member of the music faculty at Bucknell University, teaching theory and composition.
The competition, which honors the beloved Salem alumna and composer, is open to young composers under the age of 30. Eligible works have not yet received a premiere, are under 10 minutes in length and scored for at least two instruments from the following list: flute, piano, mezzo soprano, and cello.
The winner received $500.00 and a professional recording of the premier.
