Salem Chorale and Concert Choir Preview Concert

Saturday, February 18 at 7:30 p.m.
Hanes Auditorium, Salem Fine Arts Center
The Salem College Chorale and Chamber Choir, led by Dr. Sonja Sepulveda, will join with the Palmetto Voices to perform a demonstration session on the spiritual. This session includes a power-point presentation on performance practices, history of the spiritual and comparisons to gospel.
The concert is a preview of an invited performance for the Southern Division of the American Choral Directors Association Conference to be held March 2 at 1:45 p.m. at the Winston-Salem Convention Center.
The Palmetto Voices is a vocal ensemble composed of Dr. Sepulveda’s former and current students.

Sandresky Artist Faculty Concert Series: Fire Pink Trio
Friday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m.
Shirley Recital Hall, Salem Fine Arts Center
Named after the beautiful North Carolina wild flower that covers the mountains in late spring, the Fire Pink Trio (Debra Reuter-Pivetta, flute; Sheila Browne, viola; Jacquelyn Bartlett, harp) combines three sensual instruments: harp, flute and viola. Just as each instrument has its uniquely beautiful voice, each member of Fire Pink Trio brings to the group a multitude of accolades including top prizes in international competitions, concerto performances and critically acclaimed recordings.
Their program will include the gorgeous “Trio” by Claude Debussy.

Salem College Pierrettes Present “Once Upon a Mattress”
March 8, 9, 10 and 11 at 8:00 p.m.

If you’ve been having trouble sleeping lately, if you enjoy riddles, or if you’ve simply been searching through the “Princess Wanted” ads for the job of your dreams, you’ll relate to this timeless musical retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale, The Princess and the Pea. Set in a faraway kingdom in medieval times, “Once Upon a Mattress” features such memorable songs as “The Swamps of Home,” “In a Little While” and “Yesterday I Loved You.” Join the Pierrettes for a jolly journey into the memorable world of “Once Upon a Mattress.” Music by Mary Rodgers. Lyrics by Marshall Barer. Book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer. Play directed by Michael Kamtman.

Salem music faculty, Debra Reuter-Pivetta is joined by her husband, pianist Federico Pivetta, for a concert including the Prokofiev Sonata and anew work by Eric Ewazen.

In celebration of Salem College’s 240th anniversary, artist-in-residence and internationally acclaimed pianist Barbara Lister-Sink will perform an evening of keyboard music from 1772 – 2012.
The concert will include the beautiful “Sonata” by Cécile Chaminade and a world premiere especially composed for this concert.

The Salem Chamber Choir, Chorale and Jazz Voices will bring you an eclectic program of music from the Renaissance to Lady Gaga. Other music that is guaranteed to get your heart humming will be songs from around the world, spirituals, gospel and a special song from Glenn McClure’s “Caribbean Mass” with steel drum. Come experience an event that will give you musical memories to last a lifetime.

“Thoroughly Modern Millie”

“Thoroughly Modern Millie” is a toe-tapping, high energy musical set in 1922 in New York City. Millie comes to the big city to make her mark and find a rich husband. She decides to reside at Mrs. Meer’s Boarding House, who unbeknownst to her, runs a white slavery trade kidnapping her orphan boarders. Millie meets Jimmie, a poor-yet-charming guy, and gets mixed up over love and her goal to marry rich.
This musical is funny, touching and full of delightful characters. Millie learns about the big city and becomes a “modern” girl who bobs her hair, wears the latest fashions and has many experiences, both good and bad, in the city. Come join us for this charming musical that will fill your head with memorable songs and warm your heart.
