According to Kim Fierke, director of athletics and physical education, the presidents of the institutions that are GSAC members met this week and voted unanimously to approve Salem’s entrance. “The importance of this conference membership cannot be overstated,” Fierke said. “Salem is now able to provide post-season competition and recognition for our student athletes, and to form strong relationships among similar institutions. We are proud to call the GSAC our home.” When Salem becomes an official member in the fall, student athletes will be competing against other member institutions, including Agnes Scott, Huntingdon, LaGrange, Maryville, Piedmont, Spelman and Wesleyan colleges. The Great South Athletic Conference was founded in 1999 as a group of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III member institutions from the Southeast with similar academic and athletic interests. The schools are located in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and now North Carolina. All member schools are active members of the NCAA Division III. Salem became an active member of NCAA Division III last fall.
