SUMMARY:Panel Discussion\: Miss Representation
DTSTART:20120301T213000Z

DESCRIPTION:Join our panel discussion with Salem faculty and media rep
resentatives to discuss the screening shown to over 240 Salem students
and community members this past Tuesday.\n\nFilm information\: Miss R
epresentation exposes how mainstream media contributes to the under-re
presentation of women in positions of power and influence in America.
It challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals o
f women and girls\, which make it difficult for women to achieve leade
rship positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself. In
a society where media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural n
orms\, the collective message that our young women and men overwhelmin
gly receive is that a woman’s value and power lie in her youth\, bea
uty and sexuality\, and not in her capacity as a leader. Stories from
teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians\, journalist
 s\, entertainers\, activists and academics\, like Condoleezza Rice\, N
ancy Pelosi\, Katie Couric\, Rachel Maddow\, Margaret Cho\, Rosario Da
wson and Gloria Steinem\, build momentum as Miss Representation accumu
lates startling facts and statistics that will leave the audience shak
en and armed with a new perspective. The documentary\, written and dir
ected by Jennifer Siebel\, premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festiva
 l. Recommended for mature audiences.
