SUMMARY:Miss Representation Film Viewing and Discussion
DTSTART:20120229T003000Z
DTEND:20120229T013000Z
DESCRIPTION:Miss Representation exposes how mainstream media contribut
es to the under-representation of women in positions of power and infl
uence in America. It challenges the media’s limited and often dispar
aging portrayals of women and girls\, which make it difficult for wome
n to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel po
werful herself. In a society where media is the most persuasive force
shaping cultural norms\, the collective message that our young women a
nd men overwhelmingly receive is that a woman’s value and power lie
in her youth\, beauty and sexuality\, and not in her capacity as a lea
der. Stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with\npolit
 icians\, journalists\, entertainers\, activists and academics\, like C
 ondoleezza Rice\, Nancy Pelosi\, Katie Couric\, Rachel Maddow\, Margar
et Cho\, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem\, build momentum as Miss Re
presentation accumulates startling facts and statistics that will leav
e the audience shaken and armed with a new perspective. The documentar
y\, written and directed by Jennifer Siebel\, premiered at the 2011 Su
ndance Film Festival. Recommended for mature audiences.
