The Comenius Symposium pays tribute to the visionary educational pioneer, Bishop John Amos Comenius (1592-1670), by providing a venue for collaborative explorations of personal context, social history and diverse learners, as well as a platform from which keynote speakers engage the community with regards to contemporary educational issues. Buddy Collins from the State Board of Education will speak on “The Role of Politics in Education—What Classroom Teachers Should Know.” Sponsored by the Department of Teacher Education

Inspired by the lives of real-life, adventure-seeking women who wanted to lead the kinds of lives usually reserved for men, these three fictional ladies gradually discover that they are not only traveling in “traditional” unchartered territories, but they are also traveling through time as well. What will happen to these three spirited, humorous, brilliant and stalwart trekkers? All will be revealed in this marvelous, imaginative voyage. Directed by Michael Kamtman. Tickets: $9 general admission, $7 Salem community and all students.

Performance: Saturday, September 28, at 7:30 p.m. The SHE Created IT dance organization, led by Ursula Kendall and supported by Salem College dance instructor Heidi Echols, is offering a workshop, performance and brunch. Workshop registration begins at 9:30 a.m. on September 28, in Hanes Auditorium with classes meeting 10:00 a.m.– 3:00 p.m. A performance featuring female choreographers and local dance instructors begins at 7:30 p.m. and is open to the general public. Participants include: Maria Bauman, N.Y., N.Y.; Heidi Echols, Winston-Salem, N.C.; Robin M. Gee, Greensboro, N.C.; Kim Jones, Charlotte, N.C.; Tianna P. Sykes, Atlanta, Ga. A Woman2Women Brunch is offered September 29, at 12:00–2:00 p.m., featuring guest speaker Beverly Mclver and presented by Creative Capital Professional Development Program in Strategic Planning for Individual Artists. Sandresky Series: Flentrop Organ Renovation Celebration - Inaugural Concert featuring Organist Timothy Olsen Sep 27, 2013 from 07:30 PM to 08:30 PM Shirley Recital Hall, Elberson Fine Arts Center,
As Salem College and the wider regional organ community celebrate the restoration and renovation of the 1965 Flentrop organ in Shirley Recital Hall, Salem’s organ professor, Timothy Olsen, begins a series of events featuring the magnificent Flentrop organ in a solo recital. The program will include works by Bach, Pachelbel, Zipoli, and others that were played on the instrument’s original dedication recital by Fenner Douglass in 1965.

William Goodson "Bill" Mangum: Life Retrospective Sep 22, 2013 from 02:00 PM to 05:00 PM Mary Davis Holt Gallery, Elberson Fine Arts Center,
Exhibition Dates: August 23 – October 18, 2013 Reception: Sunday, September 22, 2:00–5:00 p.m. This exhibition of drawings, paintings and sculpture honors William Goodson “Bill” Mangum for his years of service to his students and the art community. Mangum was born in Kinston, N.C., scion of an Orange County, N.C., family. During World War II, he flew as a member of a B-24 bomber crew with the 8th Air Force in England. After the war, “Bill” studied at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., the Art Students League of New York and obtained an MFA in art history from UNC. He also studied and taught at the University of Florence, Italy. For 30 years, Mangum was the chairman of the art department at Salem College. He is also a founding member of ArtWorks Gallery and Associated Artists, both in Winston-Salem. He has exhibited in NYC, North Carolina and Europe. Co-sponsored with Artworks Gallery, Winston-Salem and the Salem College Department of Art.
