Celebrate National Poetry Month with poet Roberta J. Hill, a member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin. Hill is the author of Philadelphia Towers, Star Quilt and Cicadas: New and Selected Poems. She is a professor of English and American Indian studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her doctoral dissertation is a biography that documents the life of her grandmother, Dr. Lillie Rosa Minoka-Hill, a member of the New York-based Mohawk tribe. Minoka-Hill graduated from the former Philadelphia Women’s Medical College in 1899, making her the second Native American woman to hold a medical degree in the United States.
