Ayana Mathis is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where she also has served as a guest faculty member, and is a recipient of the Michener-Copernicus Fellowship. The Twelve Tribes of Hattie, her first novel and a New York Times Bestseller, was chosen as the second selection for Oprah’s Book Club 2.0. Mathis’s extraordinary first novel tells the story of an unforgettable family—and an indomitable woman—caught in a singular moment in American history. Hattie’s children, her tribes, are the children of the Great Migration. Their lives, captured here in 12 distinct and soaring narrative threads, tell the story of a mother’s monumental courage and the journey of a nation.
