January TermThe January Term provides students with an opportunity to concentrate on one subject area of particular interest. During this month students may enroll in courses on campus, travel programs, independent studies, or internships. Additionally, students have the option of enrolling in courses or programs at other 4-1-4 institutions. Freshmen are expected to take on-campus courses or participate in Salem faculty-sponsored travel programs during the January Term. Salem-sponsored programs are also open to students from other colleges. The January Term is an ideal time for the student to investigate new areas of study; refine her independent learning skills; integrate her theoretical knowledge with practical experience; explore career options; and pursue her research interests. Recent on- campus courses have been offered in art, architecture, biology, the Internet, American fiction, meditation, international marketing, human sexuality, and Spanish conversation. Recent travel courses have included "An East-African Adventure," "January in London," "Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands," and "Walkabout Down Under (Australia)." |
